Read Across America

Read Across America

The National Education Association (NEA) started “Read Across America.” This day is celebrated in many elementary schools. It promotes and motivates children to celebrate reading. It is normally celebrated on March 2, in honor of the famous author: Dr. Seuss!

Read Across America is a day to celebrate reading, which is such an important skill for young children to master.  Throughout the years I have taught in many school districts and many grades.  Schools have been pressured into teaching so many specific skills for standardized testing, that it has not left much time to incorporate the arts or story time.  When a student is asked to bring a book in to read after a test while others are still working, a common response is a sigh or they complain about reading.  Whether it is factual or for enjoyment, it so important to get a book into a child’s hands.  Let them have a choice so they will be able to have fun and learn at the same time.  If you have children, take the time at home and read them a story, practice reading with them, and encourage them to read!  Let their minds soar!  Introduce them to different genres, and let them have a choice about what they want to read.  Allow them to find a love for reading!  They will have fun and be learning in the process without even realizing it.

During “Read Across America” many schools will have business owners, parents, grandparents, police officers, etc…come in and read stories to children.  If this is an opportunity in a school near you, and you are a parent, or an aunt/uncle, take the interest and time, and volunteer to read a story to their class.  This is suppose to be a fun day filled with reading activities and to focus and celebrate a love for reading and learning!  This was one of my favorite days to celebrate during the school year!

One of my favorite courses in college that I took was a Children’s Literacy class.  Teaching phonics and reading was what I was most passionate about while teaching in the classroom. Some of my favorite children’s books and authors growing up or currently would be: Curious George-H. A. Rey, The Very Hungry Caterpillar-Eric Carle, If You Give a Moose a Muffin-Laura Joffe Numeroff, Fancy Nancy-Jane O’ Connor, Junie B. Jones-Barbara Park, Pete the Cat-I Love My White Shoes-James Dean, and there are way too many more for me to name.

What were some of your favorite books growing up?

Although, I won’t be celebrating “Read Across America” in a classroom this year, I am going to focus on taking some time each night this month to read for enjoyment for myself!

Happy Read Across America Day!

Hello March

hello-march

Hello March! Currently, I’m working on my March bucket list.  I can’t believe how fast this year is going by.  A few things that I’m looking forward to this month is that Spring is right around the corner, which means flowers, pastels, and new seasonal clothing will be showing up everywhere!  Also, we have the time change coming up, so that means it will be brighter longer!  I hope you all had a first great day of March!

Marvelous Marble

Marvelous Marble

One of my favorite designs and trends right now is any item that is white and grey marble. I am really liking a variety of these products. Everything and anything from jewelry, paper products, soaps, home decor, etc. If there is a hint of copper or gold added within the marble, than that is an added bonus for me! My eyes are immediately attracted and I seem to gravitate over to the product when I spot this marble pattern. Here are a few marble items that I currently have my eye on.

Valentine’s Day DIY Plant Craft

Valentine’s Day DIY Plant Craft

Life gets in the way sometimes too often, and we miss out on doing things that we enjoy. I love being creative or trying fun new craft projects from time to time. After having enough of these cold, dreary days, I decided to purchase two plants. The first plant I chose had beautiful hot pink flowers, which was the perfect thing to brighten up a lot of the grey, chilly days that we have had here. (An added bonus was that it was on clearance for $0.98, and I thought it needed a home ♥♥♥♥ ) The second plant that I purchased was also affordable. It was only $3.48. Both plants were purchased at Home Depot.

Once I found my plants, I stopped at Michaels and picked up two different sized terra cotta pots and terra cotta dishes. I chose these to fit the size of the plants. I already had acrylic paint, washi tape, paintbrushes, and mod podge at home.

Next, I was excited to get creative, use my brain and come up with designs. I wanted to use my washi tape and chose to use the colors of pink and red in honor of the upcoming holiday. Since my flowers were hot pink, I chose a pale pink to make the flowers pop and then used the other colors that would match the washi tape. The bigger plant, which has shades of oranges, yellows, and reds outlining the leaves, would look nice with something red on the pot. What else better than a huge red heart for Valentine’s Day? The creative juices were really flowing this day, because I came up with the cute quote, “Love Me and Watch Me Grow!” This cute little saying tied in perfectly with Valentine’s Day and with taking care of plants!

The different design possibilities are endless! These also make really cute, personal gifts. Next time, I’d like to purchase a few cool cacti and an aloe plant. Once spring comes a little closer, I will be super excited to plan what herbs and flowers I’ll want to grow for spring and summer.

Creating and painting these pots was an enjoyable and great way to relax! Plus, the finished product is so pretty to look at! I can’t wait to design more pots for my plants in the near future!

Here is what you will need for a DIY Terra Cotta Pot Project

Materials:

  • Terra Cotta Pot (Depending on the size of your plant.)

  • Terra Cotta Dish

  • Purchase a plant

  • Potting Soil

  • Acrylic or Outdoor Patio Paint

  • Paintbrushes

  • Mod Podge (optional)

  • Washi Tape (optional)

  • Paper Plates or Newspaper (to paint on)

  1. First, place the paper plates or newspaper down where you plan on painting so that you don’t get any unwanted paint on your surface.

  2. Next, create a design and choose your paint colors.

  3. Then, let the fun begin! Start painting and decorating your plant pot! I let the paint dry thoroughly. (The first coat took a few hours to dry.) I applied two total coats of paint to my project. I painted Mod Podge over the pot with the washi tape to seal the tape to the pot.

  4. Let the pot sit for at least 24 hours before adding the potting soil and planting your plant.

  5. Water your plant, love it, and watch it grow!

Pretty in Pink-Valentine’s Day Weekend Nails

Pretty in Pink-Valentine’s Day Weekend Nails

This past week, I decided to go “Pretty in Pink” as the choice of my nail color since it was the week before Valentine’s Day. An affordable brand of nail color is Sally Hansen or NYC (New York Nail Color). This week, I used three nail polishes. First, I used Sally Hansen-Hard as Nails-Extreme Wear Nail Color in 115-Tickled Pink. I painted four fingers leaving my ring finger plain. On my ring finger, I painted it in Sally Hansen-Hard as Nails-Extreme Wear Nail Color in 219-Strobe Light. One of my favorite quotes is: “She leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes,” therefore I was in the mood for a little sparkle on my ring finger! I let my nails dry for about 15 minutes before applying a second coat of polish. Once that dried, I topped them off with NYC (New York Nail Color) in 271-Extra Shiny Top Coat.

Love Yourself!!!

The first month of the new year is coming to an end and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Some of us love it, some hate it, and for others it’s just another ordinary day. Whether you are filled with love and romance, or if you dread it and cry over it, there is a way to get through the day still feeling loved. The solution to this issue all comes down to you!

Recently, I keep asking myself, “what would make me a happier person?” I came across an article on Lifehack that caught my eye. It was titled, “People Keep Searching for the Recipe to Happiness, but the Answer Lies in Loving Yourself More,” so it caught my eye and I decided to read their suggestions.  The title of this article has such a powerful meaning. I did like a few of their suggestions. It’s not always as easy as it sounds to come up with realistic solutions that will make us happier.  Sometimes, we critique ourselves so much that we lose a sense of who we are, what makes us happy, and what we need to do to recognize and give ourselves self love.

(Here is a link to the article that I was writing about above.)

This Valentine’s Day, whether you have plans or not, take some time and focus on you. It doesn’t have to be on the exact day of the holiday, try for a few days, or weeks if need be, and do things that make you feel good about yourself and make you want to smile.

On a fun note, “Red or Pink?,” which color do you prefer for this holiday? I myself am more of a red person. Lately, when I’m out and about and see all the red and pink, plus hearts all over the place decorated for the holiday, I’ll admit, it makes me smile because this can be such a fun holiday!

Here are a few fun items that I came across that I thought tie into Valentine’s Day! Let me know how you plan on enjoying Valentine’s Day in the next few weeks!
